The city’s most popular place to go people-watching is the central Khreshatyk Street and Maidan Nezalezhnosti (Independence Square). Learn about the country’s complicated recent past near the illuminated fountains of the main square. Foodies will want to head below ground to try Ostaniy Barikad (Last Barricade). One of Kiev’s most popular restaurants, this trendy spot offers traditional cuisine featuring only Ukrainian products. As you walk down Khreshatyk, you’ll see everything from buskers playing national instruments to break-dancers "busting a move." Shoppers will want to check out the beautifully renovated TSUM mall, while local products are on offer at Vsi Svoi. At the end of the street, try haggling over the price of local produce with a "babushka" (old woman) at Bessarabskiy Market.
History lovers and souvenir hunters should visit Andriyivskiy Descent. Like Paris’ Montmartre, the area attracts Kiev’s academic and bohemian crowds. The market that lines the winding street is one of the most unusual in the country and you can stop by the ornate St. Andrew’s Church or the Bulgakov House, a fantastic monument to the Kiev-born author of Master and Margarita. If it’s summer, head to the beaches near Hidropark or on Trukhaniv Island. Winter months offer Europe’s longest Christmas season, from early December to mid-January, featuring many holiday markets with ice-skating and mulled wine.
